While it may seem like everyone surfs the web these days, there is fine line between casually checking your social media pages and having a full blown internet addiction. If you fear that you may lose interest in other aspects of your life because you prefer to be on the internet, you may be on your way to an internet addiction. Luckily, there are ways to avoid living your life in front of the computer.
#1: Admit you are at risk of an addiction.
#2: Set aside limited time for computer use.
Make sure not to turn it on too many times a week. If you have a laptop, make sure to put it somewhere that you can remember but not somewhere that you can see every day. Try keeping the lid closed when you are less likely to use it. If you have a desktop PC, try not to go near it or put something over it like a sheet.
#3: Call people instead of sending text messages.
Call a friend and ask them to go outside for at least 3 hours a day. This will distract you from the computer. If you're in school, try doing your homework together over the phone or in person.
#4: Use an alarm clock or timer.
Before using your computer decide on a time such as 30 minutes. Set the clock or timer and make sure that you get off the computer when the time is up. Alternatively create a shutdown timer shortcut on your desktop (google search "shutdown timer" for tutorials). This can be programmed to shutdown your computer after a predesignated time after it has been activated.
#5: Make copies of the information you need.
If there are pages which you look at constantly for information, simply copy all the text and save it in a file, or even print it off. This will stop you from using the Internet so often, and it will stop you from drifting to another page.
#6: Try using the computer at the library.
You won't be as tempted to look at certain website sand they do have a limit on how long you can stay online. Also, the library is a good place to get some good books and magazines to read, so you won't be as tempted to be on the Internet at home.
#7: Get a hobby or an interest that doesn't involve the internet, video games, computer, TV, cell phones, smartphones, iPads, or portable media players.
Get involved with teams, clubs, sports, church, music, dancing, singing, etc. Go for a run with a friend or get exercise some other way. Go to bed on time and get a good night's rest. Keep up with the local events in your community. There may be talks, film screenings, concerts, local sporting events, and book signings etc. Find some, as long as it is not on the internet, and get involved.
#8: Put your obligations first.
If you are a student then do your homework and study. If you're in the working world, prioritize what you actually need to get done, rather than procrastinating with internet activities. Make a to-do list for each day and stick to it, only allowing yourself fun-focused internet time or distractions after you're through with your other obligations
#9: Help with meals.
Anything that gets you off the computer for a while will help and increase your confidence that you can stay off even longer. Cook or bake something one night for the family. Don't eat meals at your computer! Eating at a separate place will help you to not go online.
#10: Hang out with friends.
Plan a trip to the bowling alley, mall, or ice rink. Get a friend to walk a dog with you for the afternoon. Avoid places that have free internet access such as coffee shops.
There are many other ways on how you can avoid living your life in front of computer. Get up and do exciting activities. If you know other ways to beat computer addiction, share it with in the comment section below. If you have questions, feel free to ask in the comment section.

As a computer major how can i overcome my addiction to internet if the computer and the internet is one of the means of my instruction when discussing inside the classroom?
ReplyDeleteHi Aldrin :) I understand your situation. Every day, you spend an average of 3 hours in front of computer in your major subject. But you have to manage your time properly to avoid being so attached with the internet. Give yourself a break. Create a schedule and limit the number of hours you spend at home surfing the web. I suggest spending an average of 2 hours every day when you're at home. Go only to sites related to your instruction and log-out to all your social media account, so you don't get easily distracted and finish your work earlier.
DeleteAre there any solution to resolve being addicted to the internet/gaming instances you can add to this blog . ?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the answer in advance ,
You have to separate your working area from your gaming area. If you play on the same computer where you do work, you will be tempted to play.
DeleteIf someone is so addicted to gaming, i suggest that he see a doctor.
How can I stop this kind of Internet addiction if this is where we gather information and some important data about our research, what if we don't have enough money to do those things you've said. It's really hard for us because internet and computers(games) make us happy. I know my question is quitely annoying I'm so sorry about that, but I think I should turn off the our wifi and go to sleep
ReplyDeleteHi Ralph :)
DeleteActually, the primary function of internet is to help us in our daily lives. So if you're using the internet in doing your researches, don't worry, you're maximizing its benefits correctly :)
Well, there are always an alternatives. You may not have enough money to schedule trips and getaways just to avoid internet addiction, but you can always help your Mom in household chores :) Spend more time reviewing your lessons and bonding with your family :)
As for your happiness, no one has the right to take it away from you. Just limit your time playing online games :)
DeleteIs internet addiction a diagnosable disorder?
ReplyDeleteYes Joan, internet addiction is a diagnosable disorder.
DeleteThere are (1)Therapies for online addicts, (2)Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Treatment, (3)Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, and (4)Residential Inpatient Treatment Centers.
We all know that we are in the era of advance tech so the usage of gadgets are inevitable. So how can you differentiate ADDICTION to HOBBY? And how can "YOU" aid in such situation? Let's say, you have a friend?
ReplyDeleteHobby is something you enjoy doing. Something you spend your spare time with.
DeleteAddiction,on the other hand is being so dependent to a certain activity. You can't eat, focus, and sleep because of this.
I'll ask him out. Invite him to do morning stroll, or jogging. I might even ask him to go to wonderful places to unwind.
DeleteDoing so will make him realize that there are lots of amazing things he could do when he's not playing games.
Internet is life, as what they say. We are rank number 24/25 in the fastest Internet connection in asia. So how can we manage our time properly if we are experiencing slow internet connection? And how sure are you that these ways could help those "Internet addicts"? Is there any data or proof that tells how reliable it is? Thanks 😁
ReplyDeleteIf loading one page takes 5 minutes, then try doing other activities while waiting. You can sweep the floor while you wait, or do your homeworks. If you are doing researches, books are more reliable source than links.
DeleteYou have to understand that we shouldn't blame internet speed in the delay of our works. Getting things done depends on us. If one thing doesn't work, try using the other method.
The said steps are based only in the perception of the author and the people who have shared their views in beating internet addiction.
DeleteThe steps can either be useful or useless to you. But if it doesn't help, i suggest an appointment with your doctor.
Is there any difference between computer and internet addiction?
ReplyDeleteHi kimberly ;) there is no significant difference between the two.
Deletegood evning maAM. Why many people get addicted to the computer? thanks a lot :)
ReplyDeleteHi Charmaine :)
DeleteComputer games, for example, attract a person with it's excellent graphics and strategic thinking. Soon, that person will long for the graphics and stretegies so he has to play more often until it becomes his addiction.
Most people use computer/internet to escape their problems and fears. And without even knowing they become so dependent to computet/internet.
Ma'am pareha lang po ba ang addicted sa computer at addicted sa internet ?
ReplyDeleteYes Justine :)
DeleteComputer Addiction is similar to Internet Addiction.
Try to think of this: You cannot access the Internet without using computer. And you aren't likely to be addicted to computer if you don't have Internet. So Computer and Internet Addiction go hand in hand.
